Apps for Protest?

More global than European this time, but I’ve always been fascinated by the use of technology in mass movements…

This week’s Economist Babbage blog has a great video on how the Guardian Project and Witness teach activists to use smartphone tech in more effective ways.

From a social movements perspective, I often see new technology as an extension of the resource mobilization literature. For a basic description of this theory, greater resources allow groups to overcome barriers to collective action.  Likewise, groups that can develop and effectively use technologies are more effective in circumventing government authority and getting their message out to potential supporters and new recruits.
