In Italy, elections are a joke

Thought I would turn back to Europe “proper” between all these post-Soviet posts and do a news briefing on the recent Italian elections.

If you are wondering about the title, it’s inspired by the surprising electoral success of former comedian Beppe Grillo’s party, M5S, which picked up a fair amount of support by voters frustrated with Italy’s more traditional parties.  I, of course, use that “traditional” term loosely when discussing Italian parties…

The not-so-funny thing about the Italian election, however, was the short dip in Eurozone economics following the uncertainty this election generated.  At least temporarily, the fallout from the election might not be too severe, as Italy was able to gain on their bonds sales despite all the political turmoil.  Maybe it’s because everyone sort of expects Italian politics to be a little crazy?
