The Coal Industry’s Secret Supporter – The World Bank

Another analysis piece for the Fall 2021 Global Political Economy students, this time criticising the World Bank’s indirect investment in coal-fired power plants.


What if I told you the World Bank was a major contributor to coal production in Asia? That seems like it should be an obviously false claim considering they haven’t directly invested in coal production in almost ten years. However, direct is the keyword in the sentence because while it might not have been directly financing it, the World Bank Group has still invested over $12 billion in fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement. In fact, a German environmental watchdog found that the bank’s energy lending portfolio is made up of more fossil fuel investments than renewable projects.
